What we Believe

Statement of Faith

As a congregation of the Evangelical Stadtmission in Southern Africa (ESSA), we subscribe to the ESSA statement of faith.

  1. The Bible, as the word of God inspired by the Holy Spirit, is binding for faith, teaching and life in the ESSA (2 Tim 3:16ff; 2 Pet 1:21).
  2. The ESSA professes belief in the triune God according to the Apostles Creed. In detail, this means:
  • We believe in God the Father, the only true and eternal God (Deut 6:4;Josh 17:3; Ps 90:1-2), who created the world and expressed himself in his word and especially in his son Jesus Christ revealed to man (John 14:7; Heb 1:1-3).
  • We believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God (John 1:18), his conception by the Holy Spirit (Luke 1:35), his birth of the Virgin Mary (Luke 1:26-38), his sinless life (Heb 4:15-16), his miracles as a sign of his divine authority (John 2:11; 20:30-31), his shed blood for the forgiveness of sins (Mat 26:28; Eph 1:7 ) and his vicarious death on the cross for the reconciliation of the world (2 Cor 5:19), his bodily resurrection (1 Cor 15:3, 4, 20), his exaltation at the right hand of God as head of the community and as Lord of the world (Eph 1:20-23), his visible return in power and glory for the gathering of his worldwide church, for judgment and for the completion of his kingdom (Acts 1:9-11; 1 Thess 4:15-17;Acts 17:31; 1 Cor 15:20-28) and eternal life (John 3:16, 36).
  • We believe in the Holy Spirit , through whom God calls, sanctifies and unites the church of Jesus Christ (1 Thess 2:12, 13; 2 Thess 2:13,14; Eph 4:1-6),on the basis of the apostles and prophets (Eph 2:20), enabled to serve and given his gifts (1 Cor 12:4ff; Eph 4:11ff).

3. The ESSA is grateful for the legacy of the Reformation and early Pietism. The Reformation creeds are important and groundbreaking to us.
